Director Of COE - Capital Equipment at Universal Rail Systems Ltd.

Mel Jones, CD has over 30 years of work experience in various positions. From 1987 to 2007, Mel served as a WO Officer at the Department of National Defence. In 2007, Mel joined A&B Rail Services Ltd as the General Manager of Service and Support, a role held until 2014. At A&B Rail Services, Mel was responsible for managing service and support operations. In 2014, Mel became the Director of COE - Capital Equipment at Universal Rail Systems Ltd. In this role, Mel oversaw company-wide operations across Canada, managing multiple shops, a large fleet of specialized equipment, and a team of over 80 direct and indirect reports. Mel also played a critical role in strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, procurement of capital assets, and fleet-wide maintenance. Mel's extensive experience includes working closely with senior executives and project managers to assess upcoming projects, identify fleet asset requirements, forecast budgets, negotiate contracts with vendors, and ensure profitability targets are met.

Mel Jones, CD has a background in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Studies. They received leadership training, trades training, and business education from Military Technical Training College and MacEwan University, which focused on equipment reliability/life cycle management and business. In 2018, Mel obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Accounting and Business/Management from Key's to the Vault & Business School. The following year, they pursued further specialization in How to Buy or Exit a Business, earning another MBA from the same institution. In addition to their academic achievements, Mel holds certifications as a Heavy Vehicle Inspection Technician, a Journeyman Automotive Technician, and a Red Seal Heavy Equipment Technician.
