Leonardo Briceno-Ayala has extensive work experience in the fields of public health, occupational safety, and medicine. Leonardo started their career in 1990 as the Director of Occupational Medicine at Banco Central Hipotecario, where they organized preventive medicine programs for 6000 employees. Leonardo then moved on to Instituto de Seguros Sociales, serving as the National Manager of Occupational Health and later as the Head of Occupational Medicine, overseeing the implementation of safety and health programs for over 1.5 million affiliates in Colombia.
In 1992, Briceno-Ayala joined Universidad del Rosario as a Senior Researcher, focusing on health, environment, and work. During their time there, they also served as the Head of The Universidad del Rosario Public Health Research Group. In 2000, they briefly worked as the Head of Occupational Medicine at COOMEVA.
In 2007, Briceno-Ayala became an Invited Professor at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, teaching in the Master's program in Occupational Medicine. Leonardo continued their academic career at Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München, where they served as a Professor in the International Master's Program in Occupational Safety and Health from 2012 to 2019. Leonardo also directed dissertations in the Master's Program during their tenure.
In 2016, Briceno-Ayala was invited to be a Professor at Karolinska institutet for a short period. Their most recent work experience, starting in 2020, is as a Guest Professor in the Master's program in Occupational Health and Safety at Universidad de Las Américas in Ecuador.

Leonardo Briceno-Ayala holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
