Ova Emilia

Rector at Universitas Gadjah Mada

Professor Ova Emilia was inaugurated as Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) for 2022 - 2027 on 27 May 2022. She was born in Yogyakarta on 19 February 1964. Prof. Emilia completed her undergraduate medical education at the UGM Faculty of Medicine in 1987 and later gained a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Dundee, Scotland. In 1993, she joined the UGM Community Nutrition and Health Research Lab and was an instructor at the Faculty’s Skill Lab. Prof. Emilia is an obstetrician-gynecologist, completing her specialty and subspecialty training at the UGM Faculty of Medicine. She also holds a Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales, Australia.

Before serving as Rector, Prof. Emilia was the Coordinator of the Medical Education Innovation Module of UGM Faculty of Medicine (1996 - 2003), Assistant to the Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs, UGM Faculty of Medicine (2005 - 2008), Head of the Curriculum Team (2008 - 2012), member of the HR Development and Planning Team, UGM Academic Hospital (2008 - 2010), Head of the Coordinator Team for the Medical Specialty Training Program, UGM Faculty of Medicine (2009 - 2014), Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs, UGM Faculty of Medicine (2012 - 2016), and Dean of the UGM Faculty of Medicine (2016 - 2021 and 2021 - 2022).

Other roles and responsibilities include consultant for the development of the Health Professions Licensing Instruments, Yogyakarta Provincial Health Office (2004), consultant for the development of Teaching Hospital Standards, the Ministry of Health (2004), consultant for the National Competency-Based Curriculum for Medical Education, the Ministry of National Education (2005), Steering Committee for University Hospital Development and Construction, Ministry of National Education (2012 - 2013), Chief Editor of the Indonesian Medical Education Journal (2014 - present), and Chair of the Association of Indonesian State Medical Faculties (2018 - present).

Her awards include the First Prize for Young Gynecologist Award (1998), Poster Prize Winner and Free Paper Prize Winner at the 2nd Indonesian Medical Education Meeting and Expo (2005), SIDA Award (2006), Best Lecturer of Universitas Gadjah Mada (2010), Winner of the First Best Poster of Research in National Congress of Association of Indonesian Family Medicine (2013), and Bangga Kencana (2020).

Prof. Emilia is also the author of dozens of books and international journals. Some of her works are Contraceptive Technology (Gadjah Mada University Press, 2007), Health Promotion in Reproductive Health (Pustaka Cendekia Press, 2008), Obstetric Physiology (Pustaka Cendekia Press, 2008), Evidence-Based Medicine for Postpartum Bleeding (Pustaka Cendekia Press, 2010), Collection of Works on Medical and Health Professions Education (AIPKI, 2016), Health Promotion in Reproductive Health Revised Ed. (Gadjah Mada University Press, 2018), and Clinical Decision Making in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Gadjah Mada University Press, 2020).
