Simon Buckingham Shum is a distinguished academic and researcher specializing in learning informatics and digital education. As of March 2025, Simon serves as a STRIx Researcher in the Digital Education Futures Initiative at the University of Cambridge. Since August 2014, Simon has held the position of Professor of Learning Informatics and Director of the Connected Intelligence Centre at the University of Technology Sydney, focusing on applied R&D in human-centered learning analytics and AI in education. Prior to this, Simon was a Professor and Associate Director at The Open University's Knowledge Media Institute from 1995 to 2014, leading projects such as Hypermedia Discourse and the SocialLearn initiative. Additional roles include Visiting Fellow at the University of Bristol and Visiting Researcher at institutions such as the University of Tokyo and the University of Colorado Boulder. Simon holds a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction/Design Argumentation and has a background in psychology and ergonomics from the University of York and UCL.
