Cameron Butland studied archaeology at the University of East Anglia. He trained for the ministry at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford.
In 1984 he was ordained at Lichfield Cathedral and has served in the dioceses of Lichfield, Oxford and Carlisle.
He compiled a book of prayers and readings on theme of faith and work entitled ‘Work in Worship’ published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1985.
Throughout his ministry he has tutored those in training mainly for church history. In 2012 he completed his Masters in historical research with his thesis, ‘The Wordsworths in Grasmere 1799-1813: a study in the development of the modern family’.
Since 2009 he has been a member of the Cumbria Ecumenical Spirituality Group. He regularly leads quiet days and courses on celtic spirituality, prayer and psychology, and spiritual direction.
From 2004-15 he was Chaplain of Rydal Hall, Vicar of St Mary’s Rydal and Rector of St Oswald’s Grasmere, whilst being Diocesan Spirituality Adviser.
In 2015 he took up his present post of the Bishop of Carlisle’s Chaplain, whilst continuing as Spirituality Adviser for the Ecumenical County of Cumbria.
