Laura Carlson

Provost at University of Delaware

Laura Carlson is the Provost at the University of Delaware. Laura was previously at the University of Notre Dame from August 2013 to June 2022, where they served as Vice President, Associate Provost, and Dean of the Graduate School.

As Vice President and Associate Provost, Laura was responsible for diversity initiatives with a focus on the recruitment and retention of women. Laura also oversaw ND Lead, a leadership program for faculty, and ran the Moreau Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship program.

As Dean of the Graduate School, Laura worked with colleges to strengthen graduate programs, oversaw professional development and student life initiatives, ran the Office for Postdoctoral Scholars, and represented the Graduate School to internal and external constituencies.

Laura is also a full Professor of Psychology with a research focus on spatial cognition and spatial langauge. Research questions they have explored include "Why do we get lost" and "What is the best way to give someone directions?"

Dr. Laura Carlson is a cognitive psychologist who earned their Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Laura also holds an M.A. in cognitive psychology from Michigan State University, and a B.A. in cognitive science from Dartmouth College.

Michael Chajes - Dean of Honors College, Gary Henry - Dean College of Education and Human Development, and Louis Rossi - Dean of Graduate College report to Laura Carlson. They are on a team with Michael L. Vaughan - Vice Provost for Equity, Beth G. Brand - Vice President and University Secretary, and Amy Ellen Schwartz - Dean, Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy & Administration. Their manager is Dennis Assanis, President.
