Anja Steinbeck

Rector at University of Düsseldorf

Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck, born in 1966, studied law at the Universities of Mainz and Geneva (1st state examination 1990, 2nd state examination 1993). Doctorate (1992) and habilitation (1999) also took place at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz with Prof. Dr. Walther Hadding. Her research focuses on business law, commercial and corporate law, competition law and intellectual property law.

In 2001 she was appointed to the Chair of Civil Law, Commercial and Corporate Law and Intellectual Property Law at the University of Cologne. Since 2004 she has headed the Institute for the Protection of Intellectual Property and Copyright (IGRU). From 2011 to 2014 she worked at the University of Cologne as Vice President for Planning, Finance and Gender.

In addition to her scientific work, Prof. Steinbeck worked from October 2004 to October 2014 as a part-time judge at the Cologne Higher Regional Court at the 6th civil senate responsible for intellectual property. Since November 2014 she has been rector of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Here she was re-elected in June 2019. The second term of office began on November 1, 2020. On December 2, 2020, she was named "University Manager of the Year" by the CHE Center for Higher Education Development and the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit".

Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck is married and has two children.
