Piotr Stepnowski

Rector at University of Gdansk

Prof. Dr Hab. Piotr Stepnowski was born on June 30, 1970 in Gdańsk. After completing primary school, he continued his education at Saint Patrick High School in Halifax and High School No. 3 in Gdynia . After passing the secondary school-leaving examination, he began studies at the University of Gdańsk, in the newly established inter-faculty field of Environmental Protection, launched in 1990 by the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and the Faculty of Biology, Geography and Oceanology. After defending his diploma, he began doctoral studies at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot. He obtained his doctorate (1999) and postdoctoral degree (2005) at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk. In 2010 he was awarded the title of professor.

Since 2006, he has been the head of the Department of Environmental Analysis. In the years 2008–2011 he was the deputy dean, and in the years 2012-2016 he was the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk. In 2011-2012 he was the organizer and the first director of the Institute of Environmental Protection and Human Health of the University of Gdańsk. In the years 2016-2020 he was the Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation at the University of Gdańsk. From September this year, he was appointed the first director of the Union of Universities in Gdańsk. Daniel Fahrenheit.

On November 23, he was elected rector of the University of Gdańsk for the 2020/2024 term.

He completed several long-term research internships, including at the University of Lund, the La Spezia Sea Research Center and the University of Bremen. He was a participant of the polar scientific expedition of the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences on board r/v "Oceania".
