Kerstin Fooken is currently an Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Hamburg, holding this position since March 2022. Fooken has previous experience as a Visiting Scholar at Waseda University in September 2024, and as a JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Waseda University from December 2020 to February 2022. Other roles include serving as an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University and Birkbeck, University of London, where courses focused on Japanese arts, popular culture, and cinema in East Asia were taught. Fooken's education includes a PhD in Film Studies and a Master of Arts in Japanese Studies from SOAS University of London. Additionally, a background in Japanese language and culture was developed through studies at Dokkyo University and Gerhard Mercator Universität.
