Moreland Smith has a diverse work experience in various roles and organizations. Moreland began their career in 1992 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) as a Scheduling Officer in the Registrar's Office. Moreland then worked as a Programmer/Analyst in technical services, providing computer support for various university offices.

In 1995, Moreland joined the UNCG Management Information Systems Student Information Systems Group as an Applications Programmer II. Moreland was responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and supporting the Banner System on the Macintosh desktop platform.

From 1999 to 2003, Moreland served as a Computing Consultant IV at UNCG. Moreland trained UNCG staff, faculty, and students on using the Banner Student Information System. Moreland also taught classes on Banner Forms and reported with Microsoft Access. In the same period, they also worked as the Campus Pipeline Project Manager, managing various software implementation projects.

In 2003, Moreland became the University Webmaster at UNCG, where they coordinated web support activities across all IT areas. Moreland analyzed and modified procedures for web support and cleaned up abandoned websites.

From 2004 to 2019, Moreland held various directorial positions at UNCG. Moreland served as the Assistant Director for Research and Applications, managing a group of computing consultants engaged in technical support and training. Moreland then became the Director/Assistant Vice Chancellor-ITS-MIS, providing leadership for enterprise application development, maintenance, and support. In their last role, they were the Director of Data Warehousing, Analytics, and Visualization, leading a team of IT professionals supporting data warehousing tools and university report authoring tools.

In 1999, Moreland also established their own company called Moreland Tyler Smith Household Dispersals, where they served as the owner until 2008. Additionally, in 1993, they worked as an Instructor for the Duke University Talent Identification Program, teaching an intensive class in International Relations to gifted junior high and high school students.

Overall, Moreland Smith has a strong background in IT leadership, project management, training, and web support.

Moreland Smith obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in History from Davidson College from 1988 to 1992. Moreland later pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in IT and Management, with a concentration in Business Analytics, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 2019 to 2022. Additionally, Moreland has obtained various certifications in fields such as administrative assistance, project management, IT leadership, inclusive excellence, strategic practice, and customer service from institutions including Microsoft, LinkedIn, ServiceNow, and NC State University.
