Michael Shannon currently serves as the President of the University of North Georgia, responsible for overall leadership and mission attainment of the institution. Prior to this role, Shannon held various positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology, including Interim Executive Vice President for Administration & Finance and multiple academic roles within the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. Shannon's extensive experience also includes leadership roles at the Georgia Tech Research Institute and executive responsibilities at Hopewell Designs, Inc. In addition, Shannon served over two decades in the United States Army in various officer capacities and held a Program Manager position with the United States Department of Defense. Educational qualifications include a PhD in Nuclear & Radiological Engineering and multiple master's degrees in related fields from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The University of North Georgia is the sixth-largest university in the University System of Georgia and has an enrollment of more than 18,000 students. UNG has campuses in Blue Ridge, Cumming, Gainesville, Oconee County, and Dahlonega. One of only six senior military colleges in the nation, UNG is also designated as a State Leadership Institution and as the Military College of Georgia. There are nearly 800 students in UNG's Corps of Cadets.
