Vice President, Student Affairs at University of San Diego

The Division of Student Affairs is comprised of many multi-faceted areas within the University. Student Affairs collaboratively works with Academic Affairs and all other areas of the University to create an integrated, learning environment.

Carmen M. Vazquez was appointed Vice President for Student Affairs in 2005. She has dedicated her career to higher education as a student affairs educator and practitioner. She began her career at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she earned a BA in psychology and sociology and a master's degree in social work. Vazquez served in various positions at Stony Brook, including adjunct faculty in the school of social welfare, dean of students and assistant vice president for alumni relations. She served as assistant vice chancellor for student life at the University of California, San Diego, from 2002-2005.

As dean, Vazquez oversaw the development of a new 150,000 square foot student activities center, created a student community development specialization in the master’s social welfare program, and advocated on behalf of 21,000 students. As assistant vice chancellor, she provided leadership and oversight to the university centers, student organizations, university events office and student programs business office. During her tenure at the University of California, San Diego, she provided leadership for the 174,000 square foot, $63 million Price Center Expansion.

For the past twelve years, Vice President Vazquez has led the Student Affairs Division. The Student Affairs Division is comprised of the following areas: Student Life, Dean of Students, Wellness, Auxiliary Services, Strategic Initiatives and Assessment and Resource Management. The Special Assistant to the Vice President provides day-to-day and long-range assistance to the Vice President on a wide variety of assignments and special projects. She works closely with the Vice President and Chair in planning and executing the quarterly Student Affairs Committee meetings of the Board of Trustees. She also works closely with the President’s Office, Executive Council, cabinet members, faculty, and staff making sure the Vice President is informed of all issues and deadlines.

• Student Life is responsible for the Hahn University Center and Student Life Pavilion, United Front Multicultural Center, Associated Student Government, Student Activities, Student Organizations, Greek Life, Student Leadership, Involvement and Changemaking, and Campus Scheduling.

• Dean of Students is responsible for Residential Life, Center for Student Success, Student Conduct, New Student-Orientation and Graduate Student Life.

• Wellness is comprised of the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion, Women’s Center, Campus Recreation, Counseling Center, Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center, and the Student Health Center.

• Auxiliary Services is responsible for Campus Card, Catering, Conferences, Hospitality Services, Dining Services, Vending Services, Torero Store, Print Shop and University Copy.

• Strategic Initiatives and Assessment is responsible for coordinating divisional assessment efforts, implementing special projects, and strategic planning.

• Resource Management oversees all financial and human resources aspects of the division.

Vice President Vazquez brings strong leadership, vision and experience in student development, human resource management, strategic planning, fiscal control, facilities planning and management and auxiliary services. She serves on the San Diego Catholic Charities Board of Directors and the Association of Student Affairs Catholic Colleges and Universities Board of Directors since 2012.
