James Baines has a diverse work experience, including various roles in the University of Southampton Students' Union, such as Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering Department President, Senator, Boldrewood Officer, and Course Representative. James has also held positions at the University of Southampton as a Residences Life Ambassador, Student Community Ambassador, and Welcome Day Student Ambassador. In addition, James worked as an Academic Mentor at Zero Gravity and participated in an Insight Experience at BAE Systems. James also gained work experience at Collins Aerospace in 2019.
James Baines completed their GCSEs at Peacehaven Community School from 2015 to 2020. From 2020 to 2022, they attended BHASVIC (Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College) to pursue Higher Education (A-Levels, AS-Levels). In 2021, they participated in the Summer School at the University of Brighton, focusing on Engineering and Construction.
Starting in 2022, James enrolled at the University of Southampton for a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Ship Science with an Industrial Placement Year, which they are expected to complete in 2027. James also obtained a diploma in Mechanical Engineering with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers through Springpod in October 2023. Additionally, they attained certifications in Maritime Logistics, Ship Construction, Hydrostatic Curves in Ship Stability, Maritime Equipment for System Maintenance, and Python for Engineers and Scientists from Alison in July and August 2023. James completed an Engineering Workshop Training Programme at Fareham College in June 2023. Furthermore, James holds a Level 2 Qualification in Community Sports Leadership from Sports Leaders, obtained in June 2020, and a Duke of Edinburgh's Award (Bronze) from the Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme in May 2019.
