Buddika Sumanasena, PhD

Director Of Electrical Engineering at US Medical Innovations

Buddika Sumanasena, PhD has over 15 years of experience in the engineering field. Buddika began their career in 2003 as an Electronic Engineer (Intern) at Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka Ltd, where they were responsible for maintenance of electronic aviation and communication systems and developed a data logging system to be used at the Bandaranayaka International Airport. In 2006, they became a Probationary Lecturer and Temporary Lecturer at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, where they taught undergraduate courses, developed course material and conducted research. Buddika proposed a scale factor correction scheme for the CORDIC algorithm and implemented it using FPGA. In 2007, they became a Research Assistant at the University of Notre Dame, where they conducted research leading to their PhD. Buddika proposed the novel method for Distributed Signal Processing in Wireless Sensor Networks and developed a Mobile Wireless Sensor Network using tmote and telosb sensor platforms. In 2012, they became a Postdoctoral Research Engineer at UC Davis, where they developed Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners for human breast imaging and enabling technologies for such scanners. Buddika also developed and validated digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for PET scanners and used FPGA based data acquisition platforms to implement DSP algorithms for real-time operation of the scanner. In 2016, they joined US Medical Innovations, LLC as Director of Electrical Engineering and Senior Electrical Engineer, where they contributed to the development of an Electrosurgical Generator and developed a 450W full bridge DC-DC converter with a digital interface to control the output voltage.

Buddika Sumanasena, PhD has a comprehensive educational background. Buddika obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame between 2007 and 2011. Buddika received a Master of Science (MSc) in Electrical Engineering in 2005 and 2006, and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from 2000 to 2004. Additionally, they obtained an Advanced Certificate In Information Technology from the University of Colombo, School of Computer Science between 2001 and 2003. Buddika also attended Nalanda College.
