Gavin Garside

Principal Engineer at USNC

Gavin Garside, Ph.D. has extensive work experience in materials engineering and development. Gavin currently holds the position of Principal Engineer at USNC since November 2022. Prior to that, they were the Chief Materials Engineer and Founder at Sigma Phase since March 2022. From January 2022 to November 2022, they worked as the Director of Materials Development at USNC-Tech, where they were responsible for technical and project management of nuclear fuel and materials projects. Additionally, they served as the Lead Materials Engineer at SpaceX from September 2017 to December 2020, leading metallurgist for the Merlin Vacuum Engine and also worked as a Materials & Process Engineer, specializing in high temperature and refractory alloys. Before that, they were an Advanced Technology Manager at Metal Technology, where they oversaw additive manufacturing development. Gavin also worked as a Research Metallurgist and Senior Process Engineer at ATI Specialty Alloys & Components, leading new materials development and process improvement initiatives. Gavin Garside started their career as a Graduate Student at the University of Utah.

Gavin Garside, Ph.D. received their Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah in 2007. Gavin then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the same institution in 2010. Prior to their university education, Gavin received their High School Diploma from Alta High School in 2003. In 2014, they completed the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Course at Air Academy Associates.
