Alice Shumate

Alice Shumate has extensive experience in public health and academia, currently serving as the Director of the NIOSH Center for Maritime Safety and Health Studies at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since July 2012. Shumate has held various significant roles, including Epidemiologist and Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the CDC, and Commander in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. Prior to this, Shumate was Chair of the Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences and Assistant Professor of Biology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Shumate's academic background includes a Master of Public Health from the University of Washington, a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College, and a BA in Biological Sciences from Wellesley College. Additionally, Shumate was recognized as a Luce Scholar, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.
