Elizabeth Murphy started their work experience in 1994 as a Preventive Medicine Resident at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. From 1997 to 2005, they worked at Kaiser Permanente as an Occupational/Preventive Medicine specialist. In 2005, they joined Liberty Mutual Insurance as a Regional Medical Director/Consultant until 2013. From 2008 to 2011, they also worked as a Physician Specialist/Consultant for the City and County of San Francisco.

In 2013, Elizabeth became a Biomedical Informatics Fellow at Oregon Health and Science University/Portland VA, where they worked until 2015. Elizabeth then joined the Central California Alliance for Health as a Medical Director until 2018. During this time, they also worked at IPM Medical Group as an Integrative Pain Management and Rehabilitation Medicine specialist from February to June 2018.

In 2018, they took on the role of Medical Director at Valley Health Plan, Samaritan House of San Mateo County, and Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM) at different times. Elizabeth also served as the Acting Chief Medical Officer at Valley Health Plan from November 2019 to January 2020.

Elizabeth Murphy received their Bachelor's Degree from Columbia University in 1984. Elizabeth then attended Yale University School of Medicine from 1984 to 1988, where they obtained their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree with a focus on Medicine. In 1994, they pursued higher education at the University of Arizona, completing a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from 1994 to 1996. Later in their academic journey, they attended Oregon Health & Science University from 2013 to 2015, earning a Master of Biomedical Informatics degree. Elizabeth also possesses several certifications: they obtained their Board Certification in Preventive Medicine and Public Health from the American Board of Preventive Medicine in 1998, followed by a Board Certification in Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 2007. Their most recent certification is in Clinical Informatics, which they received in January 2017 from the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
