Ya-Shiuan Lai has a diverse work experience in scientific research and academia. They are currently working as a Scientist II at Velia, starting in September 2022. Prior to this, they worked at Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as a Senior Scientist from October 2021 to August 2022, and as a Postdoctoral Researcher from February 2021 to September 2021.
Ya-Shiuan also has experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California San Diego, where they investigated the impact of endoplasmic reticulum stress on cell cycle and human disease, as well as studied endoplasmic reticulum inheritance and nuclear division in aging. Their tenure at the university lasted from September 2018 to January 2021.
Furthermore, Ya-Shiuan worked as a Graduate Intern at Amyris, Inc. in the Biology Department, where they improved acetyl-CoA conversion in yeast and optimized enzyme expression in the mevalonate pathway. This position lasted from June 2017 to September 2017.
Prior to their work at Amyris, Ya-Shiuan served as a Visiting Scholar at Michigan State University from February 2011 to August 2012. They also worked as a Research Assistant at Academia Sinica, Taiwan, where they conducted research on phosphate homeostasis in plants and identified non-canonical phosphate transporters and miRNA-mediated signaling pathways. This role lasted from September 2007 to January 2011.
Ya-Shiuan Lai completed a Bachelor's Degree in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from National Chiayi University between 2001 and 2005. Following this, they pursued a Master's Degree in Molecular Biology at National Central University from 2005 to 2007. Lastly, Ya-Shiuan Lai obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from Michigan State University, Plant Research Lab., where they studied from 2012 to 2018.
