Marion McCollom Hampton is a co-founder and Senior Partner at BanyanGlobal Family Business Advisors. She has been a leader in the family business advisory field for more than 30 years and is a co-author of the foundational work Generation to Generation: Life Cycles of the Family Business (HBR Press, 1997). She is a Fellow of the Family Firm Institute and a recipient of the Richard Beckhard Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field of family business.
Drawing on her expertise in organizational psychology and business management, Marion helps family owners focus on the issues that must be addressed to ensure business continuity from generation to generation. She works closely with Banyan colleagues from the business strategy, tax and estate planning, trust administration, and philanthropy fields to help family owners align on their goals, make decisions, and move forward.
Marion was on the Organizational Behavior faculty of Boston University's School of Management from 1986 to 1998. She has published numerous articles on the structure and dynamics of family-owned business, in addition to cases, scholarly articles on organizational culture, and two books dealing with organizational issues. She has also taught in university executive leadership programs at Dartmouth's Tuck School and the Wharton School, as well as in private corporate programs for Carrier, General Electric, Caterpillar, Grant Thornton LLP, and JP Morgan Chase Private Bank.
As a trustee of Northfield Mt Hermon School from 1972 to 1988, Marion served on a wide variety of committees including the Executive Committee. She was also a long-term volunteer at the Appalachian Mountain Club, serving on the board (eventually as Vice Chair and Chair of the Executive Committee) and on two Executive Director search committees. In addition, she chaired the board at the Upper Valley Land Trust, based in Hanover, NH.
Marion grew up in Vermont. She received an AB from Harvard University, a Masters of Management from the Yale School of Management, and a Ph.D. in organizational behavior, with distinction, from Yale University. She is a member of the Kaw/Kanza tribe of Oklahoma and lives with her daughter in Belmont, Massachusetts, and Quechee, VT.
