Eugene Braunwald

Eugene Braunwald is a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and the Distinguished Hersey Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Braunwald received his medical degree from New York University and completed an internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins and a cardiology research fellowship in the laboratory of Nobelist André Cournand at Columbia University. Dr. Braunwald served as clinical director of the NHLBI. He served as chair of medicine at BWH for 24 years and was the founding chief academic officer of Partners Healthcare. He was the founding chairman of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group, an academic research organization of BWH. As chairman of TIMI, Dr. Braunwald and his colleagues have provided important insight into the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction and of chronic coronary artery disease. Dr. Braunwald is the first adult cardiologist elected to the National Academy of Medicine and has received an honorary Doctor of Science from Oxford University.
