Subsequently, they obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from UCLA, from 1997 to 2002. Later, from 2004 to 2009, Kelly served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Whitehead Institute within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
