Alex Spira, MD, PhD, FACP has a strong and extensive work experience in the field of oncology. Currently, they serve as the CEO and Clinical Director at NEXT Oncology Virginia. Prior to this, they held various roles at The US Oncology Network, including Chair of the Research Executive Committee, Co-Chair of the Thoracic Oncology Committee, and Member of the National Policy Board Executive Committee. Alex also worked as a Physician at Virginia Cancer Specialists, where they were also the Co-Director of the VCS Research Institute. Dr. Spira completed their fellowship in Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and served as a Resident Physician at Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System. Alex began their career as a Graduate Student Researcher at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center.
Alex Spira attended Harvard University from 1986 to 1990, where they studied Chemistry. They then went on to complete their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Microbiology, General at New York University, graduating in 1996. They continued their education at New York University and obtained their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1997.
