Michael Sefain holds a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from Cranfield University, which they obtained from 2000 to 2006. Prior to that, they earned an MEng degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Bristol between 1994 and 1998.

In addition to their academic degrees, Michael has obtained certifications in various fields. In December 2019, they became a Certified Innovation Leader (CIL) from AIPMM The Association of International Product Marketing and Management. In June 2019, they achieved the designation of Certified Product Manager (CPM) from the same institution. Furthermore, in July 2019, they received the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) certification from the Project Management Institute.
