James Burnett has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries. James is currently serving as a Commissioner at The Port of Virginia since July 2022. Prior to that, they held the role of Chief Financial Officer at both W.M. Jordan Company starting in December 2006 and at KPMG from October 2001 to December 2006. James also has a background in the military, having served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from February 1986 to December 1991. Additionally, James has held trustee positions at The Virginia Living Museum from June 2015 to June 2021, Peninsula Fine Arts Ctr from June 2015 to June 2021, and Hampton Roads Academy from 2008 to June 2014. Overall, they bring a combination of financial expertise, leadership experience, and a strong commitment to serving the community.

James Burnett completed the Emerging CFO Program in 2017 from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Prior to that, they attended Christopher Newport University from 1992 to 1993, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a major in Accounting.
