Chief Safety & Readiness Officer at Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

Theresa M. Impastato joined the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) as Executive Vice President and Chief Safety Officer in August 2019.

A 20-year veteran of transportation safety and operations, Theresa has held key operational and leadership positions at multiple agencies and in private industry. Prior to joining WMATA, she served as deputy chief safety officer of Amtrak, where she led the drafting and implementation of the railroad’s first Safety Management System and oversaw Federal Railroad Administration safety certification programs for Amtrak’s new high-speed trainsets, rolling stock procurements, and facilities projects. During her tenure at Amtrak, Theresa was a member of the FRA Rail Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC) and participated in the development and implementation of multiple safety regulations including the establishment of minimum standards for training, qualification, and oversight of employees performing safety-related duties as well as standards for roadway worker protection programs. Before joining Amtrak’s safety organization, Theresa worked in the engineering department, managing infrastructure improvement projects, and implementing quality improvement initiatives.
