Margaret Batty has a diverse and extensive work experience in various roles and organizations. Margaret started their career as an International/EU Officer at Age Concern England in 1986. Margaret then worked as an EU Social Policy Advisor at Euro Citizen Action Service from 1989 to 1992. Following that, they served as the European Officer at Surrey County Council, where they focused on economic regeneration, EU partnerships, and policy and funding strategies.

In 1998, Margaret became a Principal International Consultant at the Cabinet Office, managing and delivering projects supporting emerging democracy, open government, and EU membership. During this time, they also worked on international change management projects, including collaborations with the Chinese government and the facilitation of the Cabinet Office European Leadership program.

From 2002 to 2005, they were the Head of EU/International Affairs at the Women and Equality Unit of the Department for Trade and Industry. In this role, they led the UK government delegation to the UN Commission on the Status for Women and played a key role in lobbying, negotiating, and creating gender equality programs.

In 2003, Margaret worked as a Senior Advisor on Gender Equality in Iraq for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Margaret contributed to the post-war reconstruction efforts, developed national Iraqi policies on women's rights and equality, and implemented gender mainstreaming policies.

In 2005, Margaret joined the Cabinet Office as the Deputy Director of the European Secretariat. In this senior civil service role, they represented the Prime Minister's Office abroad, provided advice on EU policies, and led strategic efforts on a range of topics including social issues, health, climate change, and economic reform.

Since 2008, Margaret has been associated with WaterAid, initially as the Global Director of Policy and Campaigns and then as the Director of Global Policy and Campaigns. In this role, they have played a crucial part in the strategic leadership of the global NGO, overseeing global advocacy development, including global campaigning, policy research, and media activities.

Margaret Batty earned a BA Hons degree in Politics from Lancaster University, which they attended from 1980 to 1983. Following that, they pursued a Diploma in French Language and Civilization at Université Paris-Sorbonne from 1984 to 1985. Margaret then went on to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in European Administration from the College of Europe, where they studied in 1985 and 1986.
