Yankho Mataya

Country Director at WaterAid

Yankho Mataya has a diverse work experience in various organizations. Starting in 2010, Yankho worked as an Environmental Health Officer Intern at the Lilongwe District Health Office. From 2011 to 2012, Yankho worked as an Associate Consultant at Management and Organisational Development Associates. Yankho then joined Plan International in 2014 and held various roles including Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Project Manager, and Grants Compliance Coordinator. In these roles, Yankho ensured project compliance with donor requirements, facilitated communication with donors and national offices, and managed a water demand management project in Mzuzu City. Moving on to WaterAid in 2017, Yankho held the position of Head of Resource Mobilization and Grants for Malawi, where they led efforts to raise and manage income from donors and fostered partnerships. Yankho also assumed the role of Acting and Regional Funding Manager, responsible for regional funding coordination and business development. Currently, Yankho works as the Regional Funding Manager for Southern Africa at WaterAid, leading business development and grants management across six countries in the region.

Yankho Mataya received a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Environmental Health from Solusi University, where they studied from 2005 to 2011. They further pursued their education at Maastricht University from 2011 to 2012, earning a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Global Health. In terms of additional certifications, Yankho received training in Financial Management for USAID Funding and USAID rules and regulations: grants and cooperative agreements from Humentum in September 2019. Additionally, they completed a Trainers training on Occupational Safety and Health Management, which was conducted by the National Social Security Agency of Zimbabwe in 2008.
