Sonya O. Hunte, Ed.D. has over 20 years of work experience in various roles related to community engagement and social services. Sonya O. currently works as the Senior Director of Strategic Community Engagement at Waterford.org. Prior to this, they served as the Senior Director of the Office of Equity and Community Engagement at the Anchorage School District for four years. Sonya O. also held the position of Vice President of Education Impact at the United Way of Anchorage. Additionally, Sonya has experience working for Atlanta Public Schools as the Director of Alumni & Family Engagement, Employee Engagement Coordinator, and Homeless Education Liaison. Sonya O. has also worked as a Social Work Field Instructor at Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University, and the University of Georgia. Earlier in their career, Sonya worked for Fulton County Government as a Social Services Program Coordinator, and for the Georgia Department of Human Resources as a Social Services Supervisor and Specialist. With their diverse background in community engagement, education, and social services, Sonya brings a wealth of experience to their current role at Waterford.org.
Sonya O. Hunte, Ed.D. obtained their Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Policy and Leadership from American University, completing their studies from 2019 to 2022. In addition, they participated in the Public Education Leadership Project Summer Institute at Harvard University in 2020. Prior to this, Sonya earned a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree with a focus on Clinical Social Work from Boston College between 1999 and 2001. Sonya O. began their academic journey at Penn State University, where they achieved a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Sociology from 1995 to 1999. Furthermore, Sonya attended Brooklyn Technical High School from 1991 to 1995, specializing in Environmental Science.
