Emma Spies

Emma Spies is a dedicated marine sciences professional currently serving as a Hatchery Technician Apprentice at Sitka Sound Science Center since June 2023, while also working as a Research Assistant at Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve since May 2022, focusing on the invasive European green crab. Emma's previous roles include a Student Research Assistant at both Brady Lab and Cammen Lab, where critical research was conducted on the Maine lobster supply chain and immunogenetics of seals, respectively. Additional experience includes food service at Ken's Place Seafood Restaurant and lifeguarding at Portland YMCA. Emma holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Marine Sciences from the University of Maine, completed in May 2021, and a GED from The Maine Girls' Academy, obtained in May 2017.

Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a National Estuarine Research Reserve with its headquarters listed on the National Register of Historic Places. MISSION: The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve works to expand knowledge about coasts and estuaries, engage people in environmental learning, and involve communities in conserving natural resources, all with a goal of protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems around the Gulf of Maine. Wells Reserve funding comes primarily from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Laudholm Trust, a member-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
