Andy Crockett

A303 Stonehenge Project Director at Wessex Archaeology

Andy Crockett joined Wessex Archaeology in 1990, and was appointed Regional Director for WA South fieldwork in 2013. As a lifelong archaeologist, Andy's specialisms over the years have been fieldwork and project management, with a particular focus throughout his career at Wessex Archaeology on fieldwork projects in and around the Stonehenge World Heritage Site. More broadly, much of his project management career has specialized in the strategic direction of archaeological mitigation for major public and private infrastructure projects. This strategy combines the delivery of complex archaeological projects using a solution-led approach focusing primarily on effective client liaison, maintenance of viable and valid programmes, collaboration with all stakeholders to monitor progress, provision of guidance to the project team, and both financial control and project quality assurance.

Wessex Archaeology was awarded the A303 Stonehenge Tunnel archaeology contract in October 2020. With the breadth and depth of his experience associated with the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, Andy was delighted to accept the position as Wessex Archaeology A303 Stonehenge Project Director for the duration of their works. From his earliest days at Wessex Archaeology, he has been involved in helping to try and find solutions for the setting of the monument in relation to not only the current A303, but previously the former A344 and original Visitor’s Centre, and he will therefore be proud to complete this process as the A303 Stonehenge Project Director.

From his earliest experiences working with the Central Excavation Unit on the circuit, he has always been motivated by people: not just the privilege of working with colleagues who are overwhelmingly driven by a passion for what they do, but the almost unrivaled opportunity to glimpse into the ordinary day to day lives of the people that they study.

Outside of work, Andy's family keeps him busy enough, but in his spare time, he travels regularly in support of his hometown football club Colchester United.
