Bill Moffat

Project Manager at Wessex Archaeology

Bill Moffat joined the Fieldwork team in the mid-'90s and has worked on and off with Wessex Archaeology since then. As a Project Manager, Bill is responsible for costing, designing, and implementing archaeological investigations for clients and supporting fieldwork staff in their execution.

He has over 30 years of experience within the sector and his expertise lies in interpreting complex stratigraphy and archaeological landscapes. After graduating from Southampton University in 1985, Bill worked on archaeological projects across the south of Britain, as well as in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Middle East. Particular highlights for him have been excavating waterlogged Neolithic settlements in Germany, digging in Roman Dorchester, and excavations of the Medieval city of Breda, in The Netherlands. He authored the most current synthesis of the monuments around Old Sarum and Stratford-sub-Castle, which forms the backbone of Southampton University’s research investigations at Old Sarum.

For several years, Bill also ran his own commercial freelance business, building up valuable relationships with key stakeholders in South and South West England, and gained experience teaching students at both Sparsholt and Wiltshire Colleges.
