Shea Browning

General Counsel at Western Carolina University

Shea Browning is the current General Counsel at Western Carolina University. Prior to this, they served as the Associate General Counsel at West Virginia University from August 2001 to July 2010. In this role, they provided legal advice to the West Virginia University Board of Governors, West Virginia University administrators, and West Virginia University's divisions. Shea also assisted and advised the Athletics unit on NCAA rules and compliance issues, examined and revised contracts and agreements, interacted with the University's licensing agent on an as needed basis, analyzed and provided advice regarding student Financial Aid issues, analyzed and responded to State of West Virginia Freedom of Information Act requests and issues related to the West Virginia Open Meetings Act, mediated employment disputes and assisted Human Resources unit, researched and analyzed statutes, treatises, articles, codes and case law, advised on University policy issues, and trained the University community on legal issues. Prior to their role at West Virginia University, Shea Browning served as a legal intern at the West Virginia Governor's Office from May 2001 to July 2001.

Shea Browning received a J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law, a B.A. in Political Science from West Virginia University, and Executive Education in Communication for Leaders from Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business.

Shea Browning works with Richard Starnes - Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Craig Fowler - Chief Information Officer, and Jessica Woods - Assistant to the Chancellor. Shea Browning reports to Kelli R. Brown, Chancellor.
