Michael Freeman

Michael Freeman is an experienced policy advisor specializing in energy and natural resources, currently serving as the Energy and Natural Resources Policy Advisor for Governor Greg Gianforte since January 2021. In addition to this role, Freeman is involved with the Western Governors' Association as a Staff Advisory Council Member and serves as a Member of the Western Interstate Energy Board. As Chair of the Montana Sage Grouse Oversight Team, Freeman oversees initiatives related to conservation. Previous positions include serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Deputy Solicitor at the U.S. Department of the Interior, Partner at CGCN Group, Counsel for the Committee on Natural Resources in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Energy and Natural Resources Counsel for United States Senator Mike Lee. Freeman began their legal career as an Attorney-Advisor in the Office of the General Counsel at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Freeman holds degrees from Christendom College and Washington and Lee University School of Law.

Western Interstate Energy Board

WIEB is an organization of 11 western states and two western Canadian provinces, created as an Instrumentality of the States in 1970 to support cooperative efforts in the energy field and to enhance the economy of the West. WIEB supports its member states and provinces by exploring current and emerging energy-related trends, opportunities, and challenges and by facilitating member engagement and collaboration on key energy policy issues.
