Hans (Johan) Schutten has a diverse work experience spanning several organizations. Hans (Johan) most recently served as the Programme Head at Wetlands International starting in April 2020. Prior to that, they worked at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) as a Principal Scientist from February 2008 until April 2020. In this role, they focused on developing evidence for sound environmental decision making, particularly in relation to water resources. Before joining SEPA, Hans held the position of Senior Hydro Ecologist at Natural England from July 2002 to February 2008. In this capacity, they played a key role in assessing the ecological impact of planned developments and activities on nature conservation sites. Hans (Johan) also acted as an expert witness at public inquiries. Hans started their career as a PhD researcher and senior research associate at the University of East Anglia, where they carried out research on the constraints to macrophyte re-establishment during shallow lake restoration. Their tenure at the University started in April 1994 and ended in June 2007.
Hans (Johan) Schutten's education history begins in 1984 when they enrolled in Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein – VHL University of Applied Sciences. Hans (Johan) pursued a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree in Biological research during their time there, which they completed in 1988.
A few years later, in 1994, Hans began their studies at the University of Amsterdam, where they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biology, General. Hans (Johan) dedicated himself to this program for four years and successfully completed their PhD in 1998.
Fast-forward to 2016, and Hans took part in a short course called "The Challenge of Science Leadership" at Barefoot Thinking. Although they did not receive a degree from this program, it provided him with valuable knowledge and skills in the field.
