Gilane Tawadros

Gilane Tawadros is currently the Director of Whitechapel Gallery since October 2022. Prior to this role, they served as the Chair of Stuart Hall Foundation starting from 2014. Tawadros also held the position of Chief Executive at DACS from 2009 until August 2022. Gilane has extensive experience as a trustee, having served at various organizations such as London Film and Video Umbrella, Camden Arts Centre, and Photoworks. Additionally, Tawadros held academic positions as the Blanche, Edith, and Irving Laurie Chair in Women's Studies at Rutgers University in 2012 and as Chair & Board Member of the Manifesta International Foundation from 2002 to 2010. Gilane started their career as the Founding Director of the Institute of International Visual Arts (inIVA) in 1994, where they served until 2005.

Gilane Tawadros holds a BA (Hons) and MA in History of Art from the University of Sussex, which they completed from 1984 to 1989. Later, they pursued an LLM in Human Rights at Birkbeck, University of London, from 2008 to 2009.
