Itumeleng Funani has extensive work experience in the field of health systems and research. They have held various positions, including Co-Director at Health Systems Enablement & Innovation since 2017, Chief Academic Officer at Wits Health Consortium since 2017, and Managing Director at Funani Health Services since 2013. Itumeleng has also served as the Director at the Albertina Sisulu Centre for Global Health & Research, Walter Sisulu University from 2015 to 2017. Prior to this, they worked as a Senior Researcher at the South African Medical Research Council from 2007 to 2013 and as a Technical Advisor for HIV & AIDS at the National Department of Health from 2005 to 2007. Itumeleng's earlier work experience includes roles such as STI Coordination & Communication Officer at RHRU from 2002 to 2004.

Itumeleng Funani completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) degree in Medicine from UCT Medical School, where they studied from 1993 to 1999. In 2004 to 2005, Itumeleng pursued a Diploma in Public Health with a focus on Health Policy Analysis at Wits University. Additionally, Itumeleng holds several certifications, including Digital Transformation Strategy from the Graduate School of Business - University of Cape Town, obtained in February 2021. They also have certifications in COVID19: Tackling the Novel Coronavirus from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, obtained in April 2020, GCP from the University of the Witwatersrand, obtained in August 2012, and Medical Practitioner-Independent Practice from the Health Professions Council of South Africa, obtained in February 2002.
