Shannon Hateley

Senior Data Scientist at X, the moonshot factory

Shannon Hateley has a strong background in data science and research. They are currently working as a Senior Data Scientist at X, the moonshot factory, starting in April 2023. Prior to this, Shannon worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University from October 2021 to April 2023, and at the Carnegie Institution for Science from September 2020 to April 2023.

Shannon also has experience in the industry, having worked at Ancestry as a Computational Biologist, first as a Staff Scientist from February 2017 to June 2018, and then as a Senior Staff Scientist from July 2018 to September 2020. Additionally, Shannon participated in the Insight Data Science Fellowship program from September 2016 to December 2016, where they built a web app called SkinClarity using various techniques such as webscraping, natural language processing, and topic modeling.

In terms of education, Shannon was a Graduate Research Fellow at the National Science Foundation from August 2013 to December 2016. They also conducted their graduate research at the University of California, Berkeley, where they focused on RNA-Seq technologies and worked as a Graduate Student Researcher in Lior Pachter's lab from August 2011 to December 2016. During their time at Berkeley, Shannon also served as a Graduate Student Instructor for various courses.

Furthermore, Shannon has been involved with the CDIPS Data Science Workshop. They were a Co-Director for the workshop in 2016, where they organized and taught a three-week program, and also served as a participant in the workshop in 2015.

Prior to their research and industry experience, Shannon worked as a Research Assistant at NCGR from June 2009 to August 2011. Overall, Shannon's work experience demonstrates a strong background in data science, research, and teaching.

Shannon Hateley completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Liberal Arts, specializing in The Great Books Program, at St. John's College from 2003 to 2007. Later, Shannon pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Molecular and Cell Biology, with a designated emphasis in Genomics and Computational Biology, at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2011 to 2016.
