Fitzroy Smith

Fitzroy Smith is the current Director at YMCA of Washington DC. Prior to this, they worked as the Assistant Vice President of GW from April 2005 to September 2021. In this role, they led the global insurance portfolio and was responsible for analyzing insurance proposals, negotiating terms and conditions, and pricing. Fitzroy also oversaw claims management, including third party, cyber, and health care liabilities, as well as employment practices. Additionally, Fitzroy was the University representative on the board of directors of both Genesis Limited and Pinnacle Risk Retention Group.

Fitzroy has extensive experience in risk management and patient safety, having developed and executed a risk management program for the Health Services programs of the MFA. Fitzroy has also served as an enterprise-wide internal consultant for implementing risk mitigation strategies and mergers & acquisitions. In addition, they have headed a Steering Committee for prioritizing university-wide risks and establishing an ERM program.

In 2020, Fitzroy was tasked with leading the university's COVID-19 Recovery Task Force. Fitzroy successfully approached FEMA for assistance and has been managing a large research-related claim worth $50M.

Fitzroy Smith has an MS in Risk Management from Florida State University, a BBA in Insurance from St. Johns University (College of Insurance), and a Certificate in Public Management from The George Washington University. Fitzroy also has certifications from The Institutes in Associate in Risk Management (ARM-P) and CPCU - Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter, from George Washington University in Certificate in Public Management - Leadership, from George Mason University in Certified Internal Auditor Program, and from Maryland Insurance Administration in Property and Casualty Insurance Agent.
