Senior Director Of Software Engineering at Zuora

Rafael Tedín Álvarez has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Rafael started their career as a R&D IT Engineer and PhD student at the University of A Coruña, where they developed and managed software projects in collaboration with industry partners. Rafael then worked as a Full Stack Engineer for a start-up, where they designed and implemented the security of a platform similar to Groupon.

Following that, Rafael worked as an IT Engineer at CERN, where they improved the software development process and introduced issue tracking systems. Rafael also designed and implemented a C++ framework for sending commands to the ATLAS detector.

Rafael then joined Atostek Oy as a Marie Curie Experienced Researcher, where they tested compiler technologies for High Energy Physics in collaboration with CERN. Rafael also performed search engine optimization and was selected as an Experienced Researcher for the TALENT project.

In 2015, Rafael joined Vaisala as a Senior Software Engineer, contributing to the company's core Java platform and SDK in the weather and applications area.

In 2017, they joined Tide as a Senior Software Engineer, where they developed backend RESTful services and mentored junior developers. Rafael later became the Lead Software Engineer, responsible for the career development of backend and DevOps engineers. Rafael then served as the Head of Backend Engineering, involved in project inception and providing strategic vision and architectural insights. Rafael eventually became the Global Director of Platform Services and Vice President of Engineering.

In 2021, Rafael joined Zephr as the VP of Engineering, where they led the Technology department and installed a high-performance software delivery culture. Zephr was later acquired by Zuora, and Rafael continued their role as the Senior Director of Software Engineering at Zuora. In this role, they lead the technology of the Subscriber Experience product, designs and maintains a high-performing team topology, and ensures the delivery of a stable product with minimal defects.

Rafael Tedín Álvarez completed their education in the field of Computer Science. Rafael first pursued a MSc IT Engineering degree from Universidade da Coruña, which they completed between 2002 and 2008. After that, Rafael obtained a Diploma of advanced studies in Computer Science from the same university from 2008 to 2010. Later, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Computer Science from Universidade da Coruña, completing it between 2010 and 2015.

In addition to their formal education, Rafael also obtained several certifications. In 2016, they became a Certified ScrumMaster from Scrum Alliance. In 2015, they obtained certificates in Data Visualization, Programming Mobile Applications for Android Handheld Systems: Part 1, and Software Security from Coursera Verified Certificates.
