After a months-long search, GameStop has a new CEO, Amazon’s Matt Furlong, who will step into the role on June 21. Alongside Furlong, the company also has recruited Mike Recupero, another Amazon exec, to serve as its new Chief Financial Officer, effective July 12.
In April 2021, GameStop's current CEO, George Sherman, revealed that he will step away from the company on July 31.
In a press release, GameStop stated that “These appointments reflect the refreshed Board’s focus on building a technology company and investing in growth.”
GameStop is in the process of revamping its business to focus more on digital and e-commerce sales (something that two Amazon veterans know a thing or two about). Since soon-to-be Chairman Ryan Cohen took a significant stake he has pushed it to refresh the bulk of its c-suite, including a new COO, CTO, and Chief Growth Officer, all of whom have prior Amazon experience.
Furlong comes to the video game retailer, from Amazon Australia, where he worked as a Country Leader. Furlong has spent nine years at the e-commerce giant and also served as a Technical Advisor to the head of Amazon’s North America Consumer business. Before Amazon, Furlong got his start at consumer goods company Procter & Gamble, where created brand, marketing, and sales strategies.
Recupero is 17-year Amazon veteran, who started his career as an Analyst and worked his way up to most recently serve as the CFO of the company’s North American Consumer business. He also led the top finance jobs at Prime Video and the e-commerce company’s European Consumer business.
