Rick Russell has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of DevOps and platform engineering. Rick started their career as a Systems Operations Engineer at HomeRun, managing and deploying core platform components for various clients. Rick then joined Rearden Commerce, where they continued to work as a Systems Operations Engineer, contributing to the maintenance and deployment of core platform components using tools like Chef and Capistrano.
Afterwards, Rick worked at Lookout as a Senior Operations Engineer and at Evident.io as a Senior DevOps Engineer. At Lookout, they focused on operational tasks, while at Evident.io, they had the opportunity to build services in-house and avoided using SaaS applications for security reasons.
Rick then joined Optimizely as a Sr. DevOps Engineer, automating deployments using tools like Ansible and Docker. Subsequently, they worked at SIR as a Network Engineer & DevOps, where they rebuilt and configured the campus network and implemented network segmentation for enhanced security.
Following their role at SIR, Rick joined Lassen Municipal Utility District as NetSec and Ops, before moving on to NV Energy as a Cloud Native Senior Platform Engineer. At NV Energy, they introduced Kubernetes and implemented automation using tools like Concourse and CF CLI. Rick also focused on cloud-native design and services, and was responsible for monitoring and managing various applications and services.
Most recently, Rick has been working at 5th Kind, Inc. as a DevOps Engineer.
In addition to their professional roles, Rick has given monthly "Tech Talks" on various platform team activities.
Rick Russell attended Shasta College from 2001 to 2002, where they focused on Cisco CCNA and Cisco Unix/Linux. Prior to that, from 1999 to 2001, they studied Computer Information Systems at Cuesta College. In terms of additional certifications, Rick obtained Industrial Control Systems Cyber Security 301 from Homeland Security in January 2018. Rick also achieved the Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP) certification from GIAC Certifications in March 2019.
