Nadim Kanan

Sr. Director, Energy Storage Engineering at 8minute Solar Energy

Nadim Kanan, PhD has a diverse range of work experience in the energy storage and power systems engineering industry. Nadim began their career in 2007 as a Power Systems Engineer at the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO). From there, they moved on to working as a Bids and Proposals Engineer at ABB, where they analyzed both technical and financial requirements for electrical power system substation tenders.

In 2009, Nadim joined the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology as a Research Engineer, where they collaborated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the control and stability of inverter-based distributed generation and microgrids.

Nadim'snext position was at UTC Power as a Systems Engineering in the Microgrids division. Here, they designed the operation scheme for FuelCells under microgrid operation and defined requirements for load sharing management schemes and fast switching capabilities.

Nadim then joined the California ISO in 2013 as a Power Systems Engineer, where they supported day-ahead market testing and the development of a solar forecasting tool. Nadim also played a role in defining the business and system requirements for the power system ramping capacity and regulation prediction tool.

In 2014, Nadim worked at SunEdison in the Advanced Solutions business unit, focusing on microgrid solutions development. Nadim supported the company's entry into the energy storage market and developed a tool for optimal storage sizing for peak demand shaving applications.

From 2015 to 2020, Nadim held various roles at NEC Energy Solutions. Nadim served as a Sr. Systems Engineer, conducting trade-offs and cost-performance analysis for energy storage system design. Nadim also took on the role of Director of Energy Systems Analytics, overseeing all battery energy storage system (BESS) tools, models, and trade-off studies.

Currently, Nadim is the Sr. Director of Energy Storage Engineering at Avantus, where they are responsible for battery systems engineering, cost optimization, and managing the battery product qualification program.

Overall, Nadim Kanan has a strong background in energy storage engineering, power systems analysis, and microgrid solutions development, making him a highly experienced professional in the field.

Nadim Kanan, PhD, studied Electrical Power Systems Engineering at Yarmouk University from 2003 to 2008. Nadim then pursued a Master of Science degree in Engineering Systems and Management in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Khalifa University from 2009 to 2011. Following this, they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut, specializing in that field of study from 2011 to 2015.
