Tom Kowal

Tom Kowal joined 8th Light as a software crafter in 2014 and has since grown into a project director who consistently delivers high-quality software solutions in a wide range of languages, frameworks, and technologies.

An experienced software professional, Tom has a passion for not just improving software systems, but also the processes that create them. From a new platform for the U.S. Department of Defense to a business management tool for an international automobile manufacturer, the variety of clients Tom’s worked with spans the gauntlet.

Tom often introduces best practices, including automated testing, team communications, and more to improve the efficiency of the projects he leads.

In addition to his expertise with Java Spring, C# .NET, and Ruby on Rails, Tom also earned his CompTIA Security+ certification.

In addition to his work delivering features and consulting on large-scale systems, Tom is an eager mentor. He oversaw the successful delivery of two Ruby applications that teams of 8th Light apprentices delivered for local nonprofit organizations. He interacts with stakeholders to validate requirements, and reviews code to provide insightful feedback and ensure they deliver quality software that is robust, flexible, and affordable for the non-profits to maintain, long into their future.
