Karen Mathews

Karen Mathews has a diverse work experience in the field of bioanalysis and analytical development. Karen is currently working as a Principal Scientist at Achilles Therapeutics plc since April 2022. Previously, they served as the Bioanalytical Laboratory Manager at Freeline from August 2021 to March 2022, where they introduced new procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and provided oversight and technical input for validation and sample analysis.

Prior to that, Karen worked at LGC for six years from August 2015 to August 2021 as an Analytical Project Manager/Senior Scientist. In this role, they led projects related to method development, validation, and application of bioanalytical methods for therapeutic drugs and biomarkers. Karen was also responsible for project organization, timeline adherence, resource planning, and sponsor liaison.

Karen gained extensive experience in analytical development at Ipsen, where they held multiple roles. From March 2014 to July 2015, they served as a Technical Specialist, working on the implementation and development of assays to characterize a biological product. Karen also worked as a Technical Scientist from March 2011 to February 2014, focusing on the selection, development, validation, and troubleshooting of assays for coagulation drugs and therapeutic toxins.

Earlier in their career, Karen worked as a Senior Scientist at Vantia Ltd for the year 2010. Their work involved the development of in vitro assays for the analysis and characterization of small molecule tissue and plasma kallikrein inhibitors.

Karen Mathews completed their Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool from 2001 to 2004. Karen further pursued their studies at the same university and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Pharmacology and Immunology from 2004 to 2009.
