Willem Barentsen

Chief Strategist at Achmea Investment Management

Willem Barentsen has extensive work experience in various roles and organizations. Starting in 1985, they worked as a researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Willem then became a policy officer at De Nederlandsche Bank in 1987 before moving to the Ministry of Economic Affairs as a policy officer in 1988. In 1991, Barentsen transitioned to journalism, working as a journalist for Het Financieele Dagblad until 1996. Willem then worked as the secretary of the board and spokesperson at Centraal Planbureau until 1998. Barentsen returned to Het Financieele Dagblad briefly before joining Pensioenfonds ABP in 2001 as the Head of Global Markets Research. In 2009, they became the Head of Economics & Financial Markets at APG, and in 2011, they took on the role of Chief Strategist at Syntrus Achmea Vermogensbeheer. Most recently, since 2016, Barentsen has been serving as the Chief Strategist at Achmea Investment Management.

Willem Barentsen attended Scholengemeenschap Lelystad en Christelijk lyceum Zandvliet from 1973 to 1979, where they completed their VWO-B degree. Willem then went on to pursue higher education at Erasmus University Rotterdam from 1979 to 1985. During this time, they obtained a Doctoraal degree in Econometrie.
