Previously, Hessel worked as Officer of a navigational watch and Bosun at Tallship Morgenster, Cadet at Seacontractors, Mechanisch technicus at Clipper Stad Amsterdam, Deckhand at Tall Ship Wylde Swan, Bosun at Tallship Morgenster, Bartender and AB at P&T Charters, and as a Mecanic/Welder at Kuipers Woudsend BV. Hessel has also pursued education in Middelbaar Beroepsonderwijs in Koopvaardij officier kleine schepen, Binnenvaart Matroos, and Scheepsbouwkunde/Maritieme techniek.
