Ryan started their career at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where they worked as a Business Intelligence Analyst, performing financial analysis and counseling for various departments. Ryan then joined Kaiser Permanente as a Project Business Analyst, specifically focusing on a Y2K project for hospitals and the TPMG Group of Physicians.

After Kaiser Permanente, Ryan worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco as a Senior System Analyst Project Lead. During their time there, they were involved in implementing ERP and database systems for the Federal Reserve System, as well as providing daily implementation and customer support for users.

Ryan then pursued a Masters of Science degree in Economics & Business Administration (Computer Information Systems) from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from 1990 to 1993. In 1993, Ryan continued their education and completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Business Administration at Washington University in St. Louis, specializing in the field. Ryan also obtained a Certificate in Computer Programming, specifically in UNIX, XML, VISUAL BASIC, SQL, DATAWAREHOUSE, and LEAN from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004.
