Brian Keaton has a long and extensive work experience in the field of Safety & Health. Brian started their career in 1998 at Alpha Natural Resources, where they held various safety and management positions in subsidiaries and legacy companies. From 2009 to 2011, they served as the Director of Industrial Hygiene. Brian then moved on to become the Assistant Vice President of Safety & Health from 2011 to 2014, before being promoted to Vice President. In 2018, Brian joined Alpha Metallurgical Resources as the Vice President of Safety & Health. Brian later assumed the role of Senior Vice President.

Brian Keaton holds a Master's Degree in Safety Management from Marshall University, which they completed in 2000. Prior to that, they earned a Bachelor's Degree in Safety Engineering & Technology from the same institution, graduating in 1997. Brian also pursued Leadership Development at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. In addition to their formal education, Brian Keaton has obtained a certification as a Certified Mine Safety Professional, although the details regarding the institution and the year of obtaining the certification are unknown.
