About the position

Altruist is entering an exciting phase, and we're looking for an Assistant General Counsel to join our growing Legal Team. As the 2nd member of our in-house legal team, you will take ownership of commercial contracts, NDAs, broker-dealer agreements, and much more. This is a high-impact position that will be instrumental in Altruist’s continued rapid growth and will have opportunities for significant career growth as well.

What you’ll do

  • As our first commercial attorney, take ownership of all aspects of contracting for Altruist - draft, review and/or negotiate commercial contracts, vendor contracts, SaaS/enterprise software, facilities/real estate, professional services and supplier contracts.
  • Ensure Altruist’s commercial relationships comply with applicable law, Altruist’s data privacy and security policies, relevant privacy regulations and outsourced services guidelines.
  • Working closely with the contract manager, build out an enterprise-grade contract lifecycle management system and assist the procurement team in helping to implement tools, processes, training and playbooks to better manage vendor contracts and mitigate risk.
  • Quickly become a leader and expert in negotiating agreements specific to our industry, including NDAs, market data agreements, data access agreements, MSDAs,  model marketplace license agreements, MSLAs, mutual fund selling agreements/mutual fund distributor agreements and others.
  • Help negotiate and manage all transactions for the company, including any funding rounds, M&A matters and partnership agreements. 
  • Partner cross-functionally with teams including compliance, finance and product.
  • Identify and evaluate business and legal risks, and find creative ways to mitigate them while achieving business goals.
  • Effectively distill and explain complex issues in a meaningful and effective way to a variety of cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Thoughtfully prioritize workloads and competing priorities.

What you’ll bring

  • J.D. degree and membership in at least one U.S. state bar
  • 8+ years of legal practice experience, ideally at a leading law firm followed by in-house practice at a fintech, financial services and/or technology company as a commercial counsel
  • Some knowledge of laws and regulations relevant to broker-dealers and investment advisors is required, expertise is desirable 
  • An excellent drafter. Sound and practical business judgment and the ability to handle ambiguity and imperfect information.
  • A desire to build and set up structures and processes.  

Bonus Points

  • Experience as an in-house counsel at a broker-dealer and/or an asset manager is highly preferred
  • Privacy experience is very helpful
  • High-growth company and startup experience is helpful

$198,000$254,000 USD

Total compensation includes a competitive benefits package along with equity in the form of Stock Options (ISOs). A salary offer will be determined by a number of factors including experience, skill level, internal pay equity, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations.
