Tony Asher has extensive experience in the field of neurological surgery. Anthony (Tony) currently serves as the President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Treasurer of the NeuroPoint Alliance and the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation. Anthony (Tony) is also a Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at Mayo Clinic and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Previously, they held leadership roles at Atrium Health, including President of the Neuroscience Institute and Leader of the Neurosciences Service Line. Anthony (Tony) was also the Surgical Director of the Multi-disciplinary Adult Brain Tumor Program at Atrium Health's Levine Cancer Institute and the Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Program at Carolinas Medical Center. Tony Asher has been involved in multiple research projects and has co-founded and chaired the American Spine Registry. Anthony (Tony) has also held clinical professor positions at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Additionally, they have been a partner at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates and has directed the NeuroPoint Alliance and served as Vice Chairman and Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Anthony (Tony) Asher's education history is as follows:
- From 1991 to 1995, they attended the University of Michigan, where they pursued a residency in the Department of Neurosurgery.
- Prior to that, from 1989 to 1991, they worked as a Staff Fellow at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the Surgery Branch.
- From 1987 to 1989, they completed an internship and residency in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan.
- In 1984 and 1985, they worked as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar at the National Cancer Institute.
- Anthony (Tony) obtained their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine from 1982 to 1987.
- Anthony (Tony) completed their undergraduate studies from 1978 to 1982 at Kalamazoo College, earning a Bachelor's degree in Religion and Biology.
In addition to their formal education, they have obtained various certifications, including being a member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Neurological Surgeons.
Furthermore, Tony Asher has pursued additional executive-level education and training programs. In 2012, they completed the Executive Leadership Program at Brandeis University, focusing on healthcare policy and management.
